Although not due in showrooms unit next summer, the 2009 Ford Flex already shows serious customizing potential. The crossover vehicle combines retro styling with modern sensibility. The Flex comes standard with 18-inch wheels and the two-tone roof is a factory option. Available HID headlamps, LED tail lamps, and multi-panel Vista Roof, and elaborate SYNC voice-activated communications and entertainment system mean customers can buy a tricked-out vehicle from the factory. Given the opportunity, two top customizers have taken the Flex a few steps farther.

Customizing legend Chip Foose transformed the Flex into a luxurious suburban cruiser. Rolling stock consists of Foose Design 22-inch wheels with Pirelli Scorpion Zero tires. A set of Eibach springs provide the street-friendly stance.

The paint is a custom blend of blue with cream pearl roof and tail panels. Never willing to settle, Foose redesigned the front and rear fascias as well as the rocker panels, and then wrapped the entire perimeter with chrome trim. Part of the modification included relocating the license plate to the tail panel. Other details include chrome door handles with painted inserts, custom grilles, and retro-inspired FORD emblems across the hood and tail panel.

Inside the Foose Flex the colors switch to blue, gray and tan. Seats have been outfitted with luxurious leather by Katzkin. The resulting look is one of understated luxury with contemporary appeal.

Hip Hop and customizing master Funkmaster Flex took a slightly different approach. Given the chance to work his magic, the Funkmaster chose to go urban style by using bold colors with eye-catching accents to create his Flex2.

House of Kolor Kandy Brandywine is the paint color of choice, combined with a brushed-aluminum roof faux finish. Styling upgrades from 3dCarbon include chrome vents on the fenders, chrome upper and lower grilles along with a customer rear spoiler.

The wheel and tire combination is sure to attract attention, combining custom 22-inch NC Forged wheels with brushed aluminum centers and chrome outer lip. Tires are street-styled Cooper Zeon XST. The lowered suspension and dual Borla exhaust tips complete the exterior package.

The interior features an all-black treatment with loads of high-end leather from Katzkin. Alligator print leather adorns the black leather seat coverings. Sure to wow the street crowd, the Flex2 uses Invision DVD monitors in the seat headrests in both the first and second seats. Tunes are blasted through a JL Audio 12-inch subwoofer and amplifier.
